Abstract

 With a focus on population dynamics, administrative district reorganization and urban development projects, this study reveals that urban residents in Phnom Penh have been migrating to the surrounding areas where large-scale commercial complexes are located, seeking convenient lifestyles, and since the 1990s, the population as a whole has shifted to the suburban area. The value of this study is revealing relationship between population changes and urban development strengthened by the fact such as nation's official reports, historical map and its changes can serve as a fundamental tool for future urban planning.
